Dice Media’s What The Folks came back with season 2, retaining its star couple played by Veer Rajwant Singh and Eisha Chopra and having veteran actors Renuka Shane (who made her web series debut with this) and Shishir Sharma to play Anita’s in-laws.
In What The Folks Season 1 you met The Sharmas, in Season 2 we meet the Solankis and explore other family relations and dynamics. The Solankis are continuously juxtaposed with the Sharmas highlighting how no two families are the same. Nikhil dealt with his in-laws in the first season in What the Folks Season 2 Anita deals with hers.
Father Solanki is getting treated for Dementia, that causes a slow decline in patient’s memory- this narrative is intertwined in the main one but is never overplayed.
Nikhil and Shreya (played by Kriti Vij) have a strained sibling relationship, none of them knows how to communicate with each other nor do they know how to. Just like the first season, this one too is relatable when it comes to the loss of understanding of relations with a close one.
Anita tries to nudge Nikhil into mending relations with his family and in the process, we see fractures in the relation of the husband and wife too.
Shreya is in a failed marriage and Nikhil finally manages her to open up, after many failed attempts. Shreya’s character rightfully depicts the fear of the ‘married daughter’ who cannot open up to her family about her personal problems and she doesn’t want them to think any less of her or worse, tell her that she is on her own.
Shreya wants a divorce from her abusive husband and the news upsets the Solankis and relatives at a party.
What The Folks Season 2 gets more serious than the first one, all the while not losing its relatability factor. We know of Nikhils, Shreyas, Anitas and Jasons in our lives even if we are not ones. Season 2 explores different problems and the outstanding performances by the cast, just make the series better.
The six-episode web series has a decent viewership of 4-8 million and will appeal to a larger audience given the topics it touches.
