The 20s is a crucial period in the lives of adults– priorities change, you are no longer a student, career and relationship life takes precedent- 20s is the time one starts ‘adulting’.
Adulting Web Series has been directed by Jessica Sadana, written by Ayesha Nair and Maitreyee Upadhyay and taking us through the life of 20 something adults are Ray and Nikhat played by Yashaswini Dayama and Aisha Ahmed respectively.
The show introduces us to two Delhi girls trying to survive the fast-paced, bustling life of Mumbai. For girls who are ‘broke AF’- they sure do live in a fancy apartment.
The two try to make up for the money spent on maid and rent by taking buses to work instead of auto- the urban poor. The four episodes are these girls’ rant about stereotypical urban Mumbai problems- rent, bai, nasty boss, broker, neighbor.
One thing the show manages to portray, even if, is the modern adult’s overreaction to non-issues, of making mountains out of molehills, of not realizing there is a world outside of their own bubble- they are both whiny individuals for whom the number of Instagram followers matter. This is a portrayal of modern adult’s preoccupation with social media.
In juxtaposition one is reminded of the movie Dhobi Ghat where Prateek Babbar, another 20 something person is trying to survive and make it in the city of a dream whose reality is filthy, shady, clogged with people and traffic- a side of Mumbai that Adulting ignores completely.
The first episode of the Adulting web series has over 10 million views but with each subsequent episodes, the views keep dropping. Episodes 2, 3, 4 have about 7-8 million views but the viewership of the last episode of Adulting Season 1 dropped to 5 million. The comments on YouTube suggest that Dice Media’s Adulting worked for some who simply found it ‘amazing’ while others, found it lacking from a critical point of view.
