Shabana Azmi leads a cast of women telling ghostly tales of traditional horrors.

Kaali Khuhi Review starts with the story of Darshan featuring Satyadeep Misra and Priya featuring Sanjeeda Ali Shaikh who with their daughter Shivangi played by Riva Arora visit an unnamed village in Punjab to check on the ailing mother of Darshan. After reaching the place Priya and Shivangi start feeling something eerie about the place.

Even their neighbours and next door relatives are hesitant in visiting the place as they feel that the house is cursed and Priya and Sivangi are unable to understand the reason behind the same. The intent and theme of Kaali Khuhi is very clear. There is an abandoned well in the village which has evil spirits in it which should be left alone for everybody’s survival and safety.

However, one day an innocent villager opens the lid and spirits go back to the village, especially a small girl who goes to Darshan’s house on a cycle. The old woman who does not have any idea of the trial that is about to fall on her and her family welcomes the little wet girl in her house assuming that she has lost her way and must be reunited with her parents.

She does not have the slightest idea that the girl is not someone who is a damsel in distress and it is she who needs to be saved. Dadi featuring Leela Samson faints and falls ill when she comes to know the true identity of the spirit.

Priya, despite having a strained relationship with her mother-in-law tags along with her husband and daughter to realise that her husband does not want to leave the house and the spirits residing at the top floor of their home won’t let them stay. The back story and the desires of the spirit is what forms the plot of the movie.

Kaali Khuhi is filmed and co-written by Terrie Samundra. Kaali Khuhi highlights the problem of female foeticide which is still prevalent in some parts of India even today. The village of Punjab remains nameless throughout the film which is a metaphor to lay stress on the fact that the problem is not confined to any geographical territory. Female infanticide and foeticide is widespread and Samundra and Co. is trying to lay stress on that.

The main obstacle in the narrative is the execution and pace of the story which is very confusing and chaotic at times. The movie progresses very slowly and the plot is completely lost to focus on a balanced narrative which leaves us confused.

Three women in the village are carrying out age-old customs of mourning at the birth of a girl child. This shows that the sadness of the birth of girls was not restricted to men. However, by portraying Satyadeep Misra as the only male who criticises the act is something far from our understanding. The dialogues are spelt out and clear which dispels the viewer’s imagination. Kaali Khuhi is not a scary drama apart from a few mirror reflections and some passing shadows.

Riva Arora as Shivangi who is a nai pidhi and a torchbearer of change gives a performance which keeps you glued to the story though at times her acts are confusing. Rose Rathore gives a much-needed innocence to the story as a little girl next door. Satyadeep Misra’s role in the movie is of a bigoted man which he plays with ease. Shabana Azmi is a show stealer who as Satya Masi rebels the age-old customs. Sanjeeda Shaikh portrays the role of a headstrong Priya to the core.

The music heightens the scary factor in the otherwise dull movie. The theme of the movie is good but its execution is very poor. We have hereby compiled Kaali Khuhi ratings from various sources which will help you in deciding to watch the film.
