Chaman Bahaar is a lazy, laborious, ride, says Joginder Tuteja.

t is unusual that a movie opens with a deleted scene. Apart from that, it is more unusual that it is based on a wildly inappropriate premise which unfolds without any kind of irony and Chaman Bahar does both.

It is the latest addition to Yoodle Films unending list of movies for various OTT platforms and is the worst among all. The last release of the banner Axone which came only a week back was much enjoyable. The director Apurva Dhar Badgaiyann tried his best to make a movie like Male Gaze: The Movie but failed in his attempts.

Actor Jitendra Kumar who had previously worked in Shubh Mangal Zyaada Saavdhan and Amazon Prime’s Panchayat is in the role of Billu, a panwadi in an undescribed middle India town. Billu realizes that the spot he has chosen to open his shop is barren like the landscape which surrounds it. He gets very upset by the fact. No customer stops by his shop and if someone does so he is out of stock.

The company of Billu is with his two friends who are unemployed like him. Billu’s fortunes, however, shine when a government employee shifts in an empty bungalow across the street with his family. Their arrival attracts all the male population to Billu’s shop who stand there to catch a glimpse of the man’s teenage daughter.

The girl has an everyday routine where she takes her dog for a walk and all the men gaze at her from Billu’s shop. Business starts booming and the shop becomes a place for laundebaazi. A sexually frustrated young man Billu begs its audience to let him see the girl Rinku and does not make him his own immediately as he also likes her.

He does everything a Hindi film lover would do. He slashes her name on his arm, writes their names on rocks, stars shamelessly at her while Sonu Nigam sings in the background. He doesn’t receive a passing glance in return. The intensity of Billu’s obsession is such that he changes scenarios so that the men in his shop decrease.

Rinku or Ritika Badiani, the girl whom everybody desires is a schoolgirl. She is a minor and is not of that mature age. This is not Haraamkhor where Nawzauddin Siddiqui was smitten by a schoolgirl. It has been stretched and dragged a lot in the name of entertainment. The movie is not against stalkers and harasses an underage girl with the behavior of men in the movie.

Billu in a scene throws a stone at a dog who is growling at Rinku on her walks and shows himself to be desperate. He looks at her, smiling with the chest puffed out. He thinks that he has done a heroic work and the movie is assumed to be a romantic love story. The escapade continues for two hours and Billu gets rewarded like Kabir Singh for his perseverance.
