AK vs AK is a film where you are watching the film within a film. AK vs AK review starts with an ageing Bollywood superstar played by Anil Kapoor and a young budding director played by Anurag Kashyap who fight with each other at a prestigious film festival. The director is forced to throw a glass of water on the actor’s face which makes him a non-entrant in the film industry.
His motive is to get the actor on his knees while capturing the whole search on his camera to make a film which is real and fresh and also proving the point that in filmmaking directors are the supreme one. Anil Kapoor who has characterised himself in the film proves that he is a classic wine of the film industry that is getting better with age and performing completely.
Sonam Kapoor does not have anything to do in the film. Harshvardhan Kapoor makes a small and funny cameo which becomes an entertaining part of the film. Yogita Bihani cannot be recognized from her last series Dil Hi Toh Hai. She gives a good performance as the chief camera person of Kashyap. She also plays herself in the film.
The plot has a suspension of disbelief to some extent which needs to be followed so that one can engage in the narrative.
Anil Kapoor’s part is very believable as his tone and dialogue delivery match his real-life personality. The plot initially is unbelievable because it is a take on the sensibility of a traditional kidnapping drama. The later part when Anil Kapoor sets out to hunt for Sonam gives the film a meta identity.
Abhinav Kashyap, his brother’s commercially successful movie Dabangg is also talked about many times. Twice in the film, people confuse him between Madhur Bhandarkar and Anurag Basu. Vikramaditya Motwane, the filmmaker also takes a dig at himself about his not so known film Bhavesh Joshi Superhero, which tanked at the box office as well as Harshvardhan Kapoor the hero of the film takes a dig on it.
Filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane and writer Avinash Sampath give us a path breaking and significant story which goes beyond traditional narrative and becomes extraordinary. It is a fun ride and not something which leaves your head scratching about what will happen further. It has a whole lot of hidden areas for film lovers to uncover and discover.
The rap sung by Anil Kapoor is foot tapping and celebrates his star status. The camerawork by Swapnil Sonwane is the major highlight of the film.
